Survivors' stories - resilience in action
July 15th Time:13.45
Julian Dobson, Editorial Director, New Start magazine introduces a panel examining what is resilience like:what keeps local organisations passionate, active , secure and sustainable?
The aim of the discussion will be draw out lessons learned from community anchors - local organisations that aim to give a voice to local communities, keep economic wealth within a neighbourhood and draw in new resources. Have the hopes of a holistic approach to neighbourhood renewal of a decade ago been realised? What has worked, what hasn't , and what has contributed to resilience?
In the first part, Julian will introduce Dave Clarson, Interim Chief Executive of the Burton Street Project in Sheffield and former chair of the Development Trusts Association, and Dick Atkinson, founder of Balsall Heath Forum in Birmingham and discuss with them what they have learned through more than two decades of local work and activism. What has contributed to resilence and what has undermined it?
Then Mandeep Hothi, who works with the Young Foundation’s Local Innovation team, will reflect on these ‘survivors’ stories’ and offer his thoughts on the implications for government and local policymaking. How can innovation be encouraged and achievements be preserved?
The debate will then be opened up to the audience for comments, obeservations and questions.
