Civic Hospitality in the UK
Client: APSE - November 2006
This small piece of research explored the economic impact of civic hospitality in the UK. Civic hospitality brings people into an area for a function or an event, when otherwise they may not have visited the area. This brings in additional spending to the local economy through indirect and induced impacts. The direct spending of civic hospitality attracts visitors to a locality, however that direct spending and the economic impact of that spend represents only the tip of the iceberg. In-direct and induced spending as a result of civic hospitality accounts for the vast majority of its economic impact. In-direct spending is generated from subsequent expenditure e.g. hotel rooms, restaurant meals and other local services that would not have been used in absence of the civic hospitality. Induced spending arises from the income generated by tourism related jobs and income e.g. spending of income, investment in businesses.
