Performance Network for Local Economic Development

16 Feb 2009

The Performance Network for Local Economic Development has been developed by CLES with the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE).

From April 2010 all top-tier local authorities in England will be required to produce an assessment of their local economy. The Economic Assessment Duty initially introduced as part of the Review of Sub-National Economic Development and Regeneration (SNR) will require local authorities and partners to assess the shape, scale, and functioning of their local economy together with the effectiveness of current economic strategy.

April 2010 however seems a long away given the current economic challenges our places face as a result of the recession. Local authorities need to act now to ensure they are both aware of the challenges faced in their economies and are able to implement strategy that promotes local economic resilience and is perceptive to environmental limits.

This long-term process of policy and implementation frustrates practitioners, which is why the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) and the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) have come together to develop a Performance Network for Local Economic Development. This Performance Network has the dual purpose of enabling local authorities to collect some of the data about their local economy that will be required for the economic assessment duty; and importantly discuss as a network and share learning as to how we do local economic development across the country, making our places economically stronger and more resilient in the future.
