Tackling worklessness in Yorkshire

19th July 2010

In late 2009 Yorkshire Cities commissioned CLES Consulting to analyse the actions taken by our local authority members (and their local and regional partners) to tackle the increase in unemployment that has taken place as a result of the economic recession.

In addition to the nine members of Yorkshire Cities, the study was extended to include Barnsley, North East Lincolnshire and Rotherham councils.

The Tackling Unemployment Study was undertaken against the backdrop of the biggest recession since the 1930s. Sadly, many people lost their jobs, and the number of unemployed claimants doubled in little over a year. The majority of cities in Yorkshire & the Humber suffered increases in unemployment even faster than the national average.

In the face of this crisis, the actions taken by local government and its partners have been timely, often innovative, and have provided local leadership at a time when it has been badly need to maintain confidence in the local economy. The Final Report describes these actions in some detail, with recommendations for each Yorkshire Cities member area to maintain and improve its strategy for the future.

In addition to the final report, the study has produced a number of practical outcomes which are also available to download here.

The Toolkit - this can be used either to review existing approaches to unemployment, or to develop new strategies and relevant interventions

A series of Data dashboards - four page summaries of the key labour market trends for each local authority included in the study.

All of the documents are available to download from the Yorkshire Cities website.
